Established by the Government of Alberta in 1993, the Safety Codes Council (Council) is responsible to the Minister of Municipal Affairs to administer portions of the safety codes system, including accrediting the municipalities, corporations, and agencies that issue permits and inspect the work carried out under these permits, certifying and training safety codes officers who do the inspections, administering the Alberta Master Electrician Program, and working with industry through our sub-councils to recommend codes and standards. In addition, on behalf of the Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Council administers the permitting and inspection system in unaccredited municipalities in the province.

The Council is governed by a Board of Directors which is made up of members appointed from experts in the areas of governance, finance, risk management, human resources, and business.
The Board’s primary responsibility is to foster the Council’s short and long-term success consistent with its responsibilities to the Government of Alberta and those served by Council. The Board is a fully functioning governing body; its role is fiduciary and includes a wide range of interests and responsibilities typically associated with a governing body.
The Board is responsible for overseeing the conduct of the Council’s business and for supervising the President and Chief Executive Officer (the CEO), who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Council. The Board sets the standards of conduct for the Council, through the CEO.
The Board retains responsibility for managing its own affairs including:
- Providing advice to the Minister regarding proposed amendments to the Mandate and Roles Document between the Minister and Board;
- Providing advice to the Minister regarding the selection of the Chair; and,
- Appointing and filling vacancies on the Board and the Board’s Committees based on a skills matrix.
Individual Board Members will be recruited from various professional backgrounds to ensure a diversity of the necessary skills and professional experience required for the good governance of the Council.
Desired competencies, in priority order, as they relate to current or anticipated vacancies include:
- Legal;
- Informational Technology;
- Human Resources;
- Corporate Governance;
- Accounting and Finance;
- Marketing and Communications;
- Labour;
- Risk Management;
- Business; and/or,
- Municipal Government.
A Board Member’s professional skills and experience will meet the following criteria:
- A solid reputation, both individually and within the area of their professional experience;
- Experience as a Vice-President and/or President and CEO, elected official, or other senior executive experience;
- Experience on a Governance Board as a Chair or Board Member of a public, private, not-for-profit organization or an agency, board or commission;
- Solid and demonstrated understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and legal duties of a Board Member; and,
- ICD Designation or similar credential is desirable.
The Board will strive to ensure that its membership is balanced and reflective of the diverse cultural, gender, and geographical composition of Alberta.
The typical time requirement for these directorships is approximately 10-12 days annually, and compensation consists of remuneration and reimbursement of expenses.
