She Leads; Canada Prospers: The Importance of Women's Entrepreneurship for Economic Recovery

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate effect on women. Most strikingly observed amongst women from disadvantaged populations, it is also taking a harsh toll on women entrepreneurs. Existing systemic inequalities pre-pandemic have been further exacerbated by recent shut-down measures, resulting in what some economists are calling a “she-cession,” as more women have lost their jobs and fewer women than men are re-gaining employment. What is clear is this: we will not achieve our full economic potential if support for women is not centred in our planning.

Join us and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce for the launch of the first-ever State of Women's Entrepreneurship in Canada Report and an online lunch hour discussion with incredible speakers and critical discussions about how women's entrepreneurship is critical to a stronger economic recovery in Canada.

April 20th Intergen Event

EXPLORING PRIVATE BOARDS

We find ourselves in a virtual world right now and so we thought that rather than cancel our event for April, we would do a virtual event instead, via ZOOM.

So bring your glass of wine, or your beverage of choice, and join us for an interactive discussion on the opportunity for board positions with private companies. Featured guests:

  • Alice Reimer – Site Lead CDL-Rockies, CEO Fillip, tech entrepreneur
  • Melissa Sonberg – Board member, Exchange Income Corporation, Hydro One, Athennian, C-Suite Executive

Moderated by:

  • Sandi Gilbert, CEO InterGen, Board Chair NACO Canada, CEO DealPoint for Syndicates

High performing start-ups and early stage companies know the value of an engaged and experienced board. Too often, early stage founders create a board that consists of major shareholders and insiders often with little business experience.

Independent directors bring balance, divergent views and outside experience to the table. We’ll explore how private company boards are structured and what’s critical at what stage including:

  • Size of board – what is the optimal number of board members?
  • Composition of board – how to attract the right members
  • Compensation – do early stage board members get paid?
  • Governance and roles – establishing roles and committees
  • Member terms – changing the board as the company scales

Please RSVP through the following link to join our zoom meeting  RSVP here

POST EVENT NOTES:

We are pleased to share with you the recording of the incredibly inspiring and insightful conversation from the event.

Thank you to everyone who participated and a special thank you to Alice Reimer and Melissa Sonberg for sharing their experiences with us!

Here is a recent Toronto Star article that reported diversity statistics and referring to our Women on Boards initiative:

In the boardrooms of some of Toronto's most vital institutions, the future is female

Thank you again for your participation - we are fortunate to have so many people in Calgary aligned with this initiative!
